Farrah Fawcett reportedly in critical condition

Sunday, 05 Apr 2009

Jacksonville - News just breaking now is that actress Farrah Fawcett has been admitted to a Los Angeles hospital and is in critical condition. Ms. Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006, although the cancer went into remission in a matter of months. The cancer reappeared just a year later, and her condition has been deteriorating of late.

Ms. Fawcett underwent standard chemotherapy, but also actively pursued experimental treatments. Stem cell treatments, not yet approved in the United States, led her to Germany where she underwent stem cell therapy. (Stem cells are those that produce new cells. The research into stem cell therapy is based on injecting genetically correct stem cells to over-ride cancerous ones that are reproducing.)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers stem cell therapy to be years away, and only experimental research is conducted in the U.S. Ms. Fawcett, while in remission made some appearances on television shows to report on her experiences with cancer treatments.

Farrah Fawcett became one of the best known and beloved television stars in the 1970’s show “Charlie’s Angels”. She also became the subject of one of the most famous and widely sold posters in history, a swimsuit shot that was ubiquitous at the height of her popularity. She then went on to star in the movie “Burning Bed” concerning a domestic violence situation and some other roles that were more challenging than the glamor role of Charlie’s Angels.

Ms. Fawcett was born in Texas and is 62 years of age. She has experienced several health issues, including apparent substance abuse at various times since the peak of her career.

As of this writing, the name of the hospital in which Ms. Fawcett is hospitalized has not been made public. She entered the hospital on Thursday, as noted by the gossip paper “Radarline”, and the news currently indicates she is unconscious and in critical condition.
