New Hope for Type 1 Diabetes Suffers
Jacksonville - There is new hope and a possible future cure for Type 1 Diabetes suffers. A new treatment is showing promising results by giving Type 1 Diabetes patients the ability create their own Insulin and eliminating the need of daily Insulin injections.
Researchers at Brazil’s Departments of Clinical Medicine and from Northwestern University in Chicago have been experimenting with the use of an adult stem cell therapy called Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.
Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation has been a procedure that has been in use for over 50 years for the treatment of leukemia and other cancers. Researchers conducted their study of 23 Diabetes patients by removing stem cells from each patient’s bone marrow, treating the cells and then returning the treated stem cells to the patient by an intravenous injection.
The results were promising, during the course of the study, 20 out of the 23 patients were able to free themselves from Insulin treatment for extended periods. One patient’s treatment lasted fours years and eight returned to Insulin treatments but at lower Insulin dosages.
Though results are very promising for suffers of Type 1 Diabetes, research indicate that this treatment will not be an effective cure for suffers of Type 2 Diabetes.
