Breast Cancer Deaths at Record Low

Thursday, 23 Apr 2009

Jacksonville – According to a study by Cancer Research UK, the number of women dying from breast cancer is at a record low. Record-keeping of breast cancer deaths began in 1971; at that time the number was 12,472. The rate steadily climbed to a high of 15, 625 in 1989. But in 2007 the number dropped to 11,990, the first time since the records began that there have been fewer than 12,000 breast cancer fatalities.

Despite the drop in deaths, the rate of diagnosis is increasing. About 45,800 women and men develop breast cancer each year; and it is believed that one woman out of nine will have to combat the disease in her lifetime. The increase is largely attributed to lifestyle factors such as drinking, weight gain and more women waiting to have children until they are older. Hormone Replacement Therapy, used to combat menopause symptoms, can also increase the chances of contracting breast cancer.
Early detection and continuous advances made in treatment are enabling more people to survive, even with the higher contraction rate. All women from 50 to 70 years of age are encouraged to go in for breast screening, and the invitation will range from 47 to 73 years in 2012.
