Gardasil Stops Genital Warts In Men: Study

Saturday, 05 Sep 2009

Merck is currently seeking approval from the FDA for the HPV vaccine, Gardasil, to treat genital warts in boys. This comes after a U.S. medical advisor released documents stating that the vaccine appears to be a safe and effective treatment for young men and boys.

Gardasil was previously approved for the prevention of certain strains of the human papilloma virus in girls age 9 to 26 in the year 2006. Merck hopes the FDA will grant the same approval for boys and men 9 to 26 after their review with a panel of vaccine advisors next week.

Merck has presented the FDA with a 4,000 patient study conducted over a three year period. Listing side effects of the vaccine to be mild such as pain and swelling at the injection site.

Human papilloma virus, HPV can cause irregular growths and rare types of cancer in the male genital area. The proposed vaccine would block two of the forty strains spread through sexual contact.

Though there are forty strains of the virus, only fifteen are said to cause cancer in men and women, with cancer of the penis and anus being extremely rare with less than 2,000 cases reported annually.

Most of the 6 Million people in the U.S. who contract HPV each year will never experience any symptoms and it will usually clear up on its own. There are boys and young men however, that will gain significant health benefits from the Gardasil vaccine if the FDA approves Merck’s request.
