Major Breast Cancer Breakthrough

Thursday, 08 Oct 2009

Thursday, October 8, 2009 – Canadian researchers have reported the discovery of the cells mutation in breast cancer.

B.C. Cancer Agency researchers landmarked the study and is gaining it as a very positive unveiling that can help with better treatments for the illness and a step in the right direction of finding how cancer metastasis to other parts of the body.

The amazing discovery was reported in the October 8 issue of Science Journal Nature.

Samuel Aparicio the lead researcher stated “This is a watershed event in our ability to understand the causes of breast cancer and to develop personalized medicines for our patients.” Aparicio went on to add that the key finding in the study was not that the primary tumor had evolved, but the primary cancer had a mosaic of different type of mutations that had increased over a period of time.

The British Columbia Cancer Agency reported that when a cell is divided the DNA genetic code is copied to every new cell. When a mutation occurs it causes the new cells to grow out of control and that may cause cancer to occur. The agency went on to say “the ability to analyze both the original and the metastatic cancer cells has given us unprecedented information about how breast cancer develops and progresses.”

The scientist had kept track of mutation occurrences in woman’s healthy cells that had just been diagnosed with breast cancer and also in cells 9 years later after the illness had spread.

With the great discoveries that the researchers are finding, there is hope out there for the cancer patients that need a cure.
