The American Cancer Society is standing by its claims that breast cancer prostate cancer screening can help save lives. A statement made earlier by Dr. Otis Bradley, the chief medical officer of the ACS, suggested the cancer screening tests may have been oversold.
The ACS is standing by their earlier claims that breast, colon, prostate and cervical cancer screenings can greatly add to the survival rate of people who may be affected by one of these cancers.
The ACS will be rewording some of the breast and prostate screening messages. The statement by Bradley, did not encompass all cancer screenings. The issue is the screening tool, not the actual process of screening. Catching any type of cancer in the early stages, is an important for anybody battling cancer.
This message is being taken as cancer screening is not beneficial to saving lives. This is just not the case, and doctors and the ACS still encourage women over the age of 40, to get regular mammograms. This particular cancer screening tool, increases early detection of breast cancer, which can ultimately save a woman’s life.
