Mermaid Girl Dies
All of Maine is in mourning today after learning that “Mermaid Girl”, Shiloh Pepin, has died. She passed away Friday, October 23rd at the Maine Medical Center. Her health had been failing for the last few weeks. What started out as a cold quickly progressed to pneumonia. She has been listed in critical condition for the last week.
Shiloh Pepin found her fame after being born with the rare “mermaid syndrome”, where both of her legs are fused together from the waist down. Her condition also left her with no genitals or lower colon and one kidney that was not fully functioning. She had received two kidney transplants in her short lifetim. Some of the children born with “mermaid syndrome” can undergo a surgery to separate their legs. Shiloh case was so complicated that surgery was not an option for her. Many of the children that are born with this condition only live for a few days. Shiloh beat all odds by reaching her 10th birthday.
This tough kid gained a following after appearing on several TV shows. She touched the heart of America when she appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” earlier this year. Her story was also featured on the cable network channel TLC in a reality show. She was an inspiration to many young children with physical disabilities. Her spirit quickly made her disabilities disappear.

I am so sad about this. I watched both of the specials on TLC about her. I felt so bad for her because she had to live with that condition. My consent goes to all of her family.

i use to watch her show on tlc…she was such and insperation to everyone. no matter the sitiuation she kept a positive additude. the world could learn something from her. i will miss her greatly even tho i did not kno her. she is in a better place.
This is so sad to hear. My symphathies go out to her and her family, because it seemed like in the last show that she was doing so good, but Pneumonia so suddenly triggered by a cold that killed her was probably triggered by her already weak immune system. At least she is with God now. She was destined to be one of his angels.
Her story touched my heart. Her family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers.

When I heard about this I instantly started to cry. I’m 7 years old and she made me feel so good.about the life we all live. No matter how bad you do feel about yourself she would alwways make you feel so much betterbecause of the things she went through she always held her head up high and lived it like nothing can stop us and with a smile, I love you shiloh
what a doll..just watched her on TLC the other week and she was so encouraging at such a young age!!! Wise above her years!! Condolences to the family. Such a special girl!!
