Women’s Gel Shows Promise in Preventing AIDS

While being three decades into the AIDS epidemic there may be a new breakthrough when it comes to actually preventing AIDS in the form of a woman’s gel. This is the first known product that will actually prevent the passing of the HIV virus besides the condom.

This new woman’s gel contains a special drug called “tenofovir” that is regularly used as in the special cocktail that is often given to AIDS patients.

This new gel for women will likely first be distributed in South Africa where there is an alarming amount of AIDS cases and where women are not able to insist that their partners wear condoms or that they remain faithful to them. This news came from Quarraisha Abdool Karim a known researchers at Columbia University as well as the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa. This group is also the one that conducted the study and found the gel to be preventative.

While this is a great breakthrough researchers will expect a huge demand for the gel all around the world. Researchers claim that many do not like the feeling of latex and will be happy to have a different way to prevent the passing of the virus. This is likely to feed into more and more unprotected sex.

In addition to these recent findings there are also more studies done that include a pill that is taken before sex as well as the gel. Researchers claim they are also at the beginning of seeing if it can prevent the passing of the virus between men.

Although these findings are fairly new they are confident enough in their findings to have had a round of applause this past week when the findings were presented to an International AIDS Meeting in Vienna.
While the gels effectiveness is not yet perfect it is still a big breakthrough for preventing AIDS.
