UPDATE: Michael Douglas fighting for his life against throat cancer
Douglas, 65, was recently diagnosed with throat cancer and has just finished his first week of radiation and chemotherapy.
Treatment options for throat cancer are based on several factors, such as where the cancer is located and stage of your throat cancer, the type of cells involved, overall health and personal preferences. He is currently undergoing radiation and chemotherapy to treat a walnut-sized tumor at the base of his tongue. The side effects will last for few more months after the treatment. He will be given Narcotics like Morphine, to help with the pain. Douglas says he and his doctors are optimistic. Although he has stage 4 throat cancer, his doctos are still giving him an 80% cancer at recovery.
Douglas admits he smoked and he drank alcohol for a lot of years. Eight in 10 people with oral cancer use tobacco, according to the American Cancer Society.
Douglas appeared on David Letterman’s “Late Show” last week to talk about his throat cancer.
“Not going public with having cancer was not much of an option, even if I had objected,” Douglas said. “When you are a celebrity, nothing remains secret for very long.
Douglas’ wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, said the hardest part of the ordeal has been seeing her husband tired “because Michael is never tired.” Zeta-Jones, who has two children with Douglas, said she was angry that doctors did not find the throat tumor sooner.
In addition to some of Hollywood’s top stars already signed up for this week’s “Stand Up to Cancer” telethon, Douglas will also participate in the event, which will raise funds for cancer research.
