AIDS workers being held in poor conditions in Zimbabwe

Sunday, 12 Sep 2010

Police in Zimbabwe have arrested 6 health workers for distributing drugs (HIV medication).

Those arrested are part of the Mother of Peace Orphanage in Zimbabwe, a home and AIDS clinic outside Harare for children who have lost parents to AIDS.

The doctors, comprising five males and a female, are being held in poor conditions by the Zimbabwe Republic Police. They were originally supposed to appear in court on Saturday for a bail hearing, however the police said they had not finished the paperwork, said the lawyer, Jonathan Samukange.

Their lawyer, Jonathan Samkange said, “The two charges are that they were practising without a permit and distributing drugs without a pharmaceutical licence. Five of them are American nationals — four are doctors and one is an administrator — and the sixth person is a Zimbabwean doctor.”

Samkange also said he spent the day frantically working on the release of the doctors and expects a positive outcome when the doctors appear in court tomorrow.

The church has been operating in Zimbabwe for more than a decade and that this is the first time questions over licensing have been raised. The Americans worked with AIDS orphans and patients in a clinic One of the Americans lives in Zimbabwe, while the others are among church members who visit three or four times a year.aids-workers-poor-conditions-zimbabwe

  1. Wow that is absolutely ridiculous! It’s obvious that the govt. could care less about the people. I can’t even imagine the horrid conditions of the jail. My heart goes out to those who were trying to help.
