Avandia banned in Europe: Still allowed in the U.S.
European safety leaders banned the diabetes drug Avandia in the United Kingdom, stating that its risks outweighed the benefits of the drug.
Severe risk of heart attack has been linked with the drug that was once thought to be the prescription drug to help type 2 diabetes.
In the United States the Food and Drug Administration has decided that they will continue to monitor the use of Avandia and there will be stricter regulations placed on it. The FDA stated that they will not ban the drug completely at this time, and patients can still receive new prescriptions for it however the amount of new prescriptions will be severely cut. Only those that cannot control their blood sugar with any other medication will be allowed to fill new prescriptions.
The FDA also stated that only after a doctor has documented that the patient is eligible for the drug and has advised the patient of the potential risks of associated with it, can the prescription be filled.
The FDA claims that they have continued to weigh the pros and cons of leaving Avandia on the market. Controversy has surrounded Avandia since it went on the market in Europe, and even though it was only recently banned from the European market, the makers of Avandia (Galxo Smith-Cline) has had to pay out several hundred thousand dollars to those that have had adverse reactions to Avandia, however they have stated that they do not feel that Avandia is not a danger to those that do not have any heart related illness and that it is still the best prescription drug on the market to treat type 2 diabetes.

Shame and scam. The FDA and drug companies knew about this danger 5 years ago! The drug maker makes 5 Billion dollars$$$ every year of this drug and the doctors and FDA get kickbacks. Shame!!
