Common prostate cancer drugs increased risk of diabetes and heart attacks
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Wednesday new warnings on the labels of commonly used hormonal prostate cancer drugs because of evidence of a slight increased risk of heart disease and diabetes in the men who take them.
The drug, known as a GnRH are marketed in Canada and the U.S. under the brand names:
* Eligard
* Lupron
* Synarel
* Trelstar
* Vantas
* Zoladex
The drugs are designed to lower levels of male hormones, which can shrink prostate tumors and slow the growth of prostate cancer. The FDA-approved drugs are used in androgen deprivation therapy, a medical technique used to alleviate symptoms of prostate cancer in advanced stage.
The FDA said in May that a preliminary analysis determined that patients using the drugs were at a small increased risk of diabetes, heart attack, stroke and sudden death. The new labels will include warnings of these risks.
The FDA says people taking these drugs should not stop taking them but should consult their doctors.
Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer among men in the U.S., behind skin cancer, and typically occurs in older men. This year In the US, prostate cancer will impact an expected 217,000 men this year and 32,000 of them may not survive the disease, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, National Center for Health Statistics and the National Cancer Institute.
