Friday, December 12 – The San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in Texas revealed their findings this week of various drugs and their effectivenesss in treating breast cancer. Zometa (zoledronic acid) used to treat osteoporosis, is showing positive results in lowering the risk of recurrence in some pre-menopausal women when used in conjunction with standard chemotherapy.

Dr. Robert Coleman of the University of Sheffield in England said that the results of these findings will lead to more trials. The results of the initial testing of more than 200 women showed substantial tumor size reduction but this is the “first patient related evidence” he said.

Another promising study discussed in the Thursday teleconference was Aromasin (exemestane). Post menopausal women with breast cancer taking the drug showed a 15% reduction in recurrence and a 19% reduction in the risk of distant metastases. Dr. Stephen Jones, medical director of US. Oncology Research in Houston said “Exemestane is very effective at preventing recurrences.”

Herceptin (trastuzumab), used along with chemotherapy showed a survival rate of three years without recurrence in 70% of HER 2 positive breast cancer patients; twice the survival rate of those using chemotherapy alone. Stephen Johnston, consultant at Royal Marsden Hospital and Foundation in the United Kingdom, stated “The suggestion is that combined therapy may be the best approach.” He also related that aromatase inhibitors may eventually replace tamoxifen as standard treatment in preventing recurrence in those that have already undergone conventional therapy.

  1. Hi, I am now 46 years old. I am still menstruating. I believe I am in the perimenopause stage. I consume apple cider vinegar twice a day. Does apple cider vinegar prevents lumps formation in our body, or does it help to prevent cancer (breast cancer)?

Kindly advise me on this. Thank you.
