Facebook Feels The Wrath Of Breastfeeding Mothers

Tuesday, 30 Dec 2008

It seems the social networking site Facebook has caused quite a stir by removing certain breastfeeding pictures from its site.

Seattle – It seems the social networking site Facebook has caused quite a stir by removing certain breastfeeding pictures from its site.

The offending users were also warned that if they continued to post the pictures, they could be banned from Facebook permanently.

This has many Facebook users, and mothers, outraged. They contend that breastfeeding is a natural and beautiful thing between a mother and her child, not an obscenity.

The removal of the photos led to a protest by the group Mothers International Lactation campaign, [MILC]. More than 11,000 people were supposed to participate in the groups first “virtual” protest by replacing their regular profile picture on Facebook with a photo depicting breastfeeding.

Facebook spokesperson Barry Schnitt stated that they do not remove all breastfeeding pictures, only the ones that break certain rules. A fully exposed breast violates rules concerning obscene, pornographic or sexually explicit material. Facebook maintains that the pictures were removed for the continued safety and security of all members, many which are children.

Many users have asked for a “members only” area where they may post their pictures without fear of removal. No response has been given as of yet. Hopefully a resolution can be reached that satisfies both sides of this very controversial subject. Until then, the controversy will continue.
