King Nut brand Peanut Butter Linked to Salmonella Outbreak
Seattle – Officials in the state of Minnesota say that peanut butter distributed to several schools may be the source of the salmonella outbreak across the United States. State health officials have now issued a warning about the 5-pound container of King Nut brand creamy peanut butter.
King Nut is voluntarily recalling all of their Peanut Butter made for them by Peanut Corporation of America. This peanut butter is sold only to Food Service and institutional accounts.
It has not been proven that this case is linked to the national salmonella outbreak that is currently happening in the United States. The jar of peanut butter that was tested and turned up positive for salmonella was tested on an open container that was found. Further tests are being conducted by King Nut and the FDA on closed containers to insure the accuracy of their findings.
Forty two states have reported cases of salmonella. Approximately four hundred people have been sickened.
When you have been sickened by salmonella bacteria you usually have diarrhea, vomiting, camps in the abdomen, and a fever. Most people do not need medical treatment but it can become a dangerous situation if you become dehydrated. If you become dehydrated then you would need to seek medical treatment. The typical medical treatment for dehydration is for a patient to receive fluids through an IV. Some patients will also be given antibiotics to make them feel better and fight off the bacteria. The symptoms of salmonella bacteria can last for about a week.
California said that there are currently fifty one cases of salmonella in their state. Ohio has reported fifty cases of salmonella in their state. This is an estimate because sometimes people do not know that they have salmonella they just think they have a stomach virus and do not visit a hospital.
Salmonella can be caused by improperly handling meat and poultry. When you handle meat you need to be very careful. You need to wash your hands before you prepare any food. If you are going to handle meat you need to make sure that the surface that you are using is clean. If you are using a cutting board you need to make sure that you wash it after you cut and prepare meat and poultry on it. Many people chop other food items such as vegetables on a cutting board without cleaning it and this can cause salmonella poisoning. You need to wash both the cutting board and the knife that you are using in warm water and soap before you reuse it after cutting meat. You need to wash your hands after touching meat. You need to make sure that the meat and poultry are cooked properly. You can find out if it is cooked properly by using a meat thermometer.
It can be hard to trace the source of salmonella poisoning. During the last salmonella outbreak it took a while to determine that jalapeño peppers had caused a salmonella outbreak. They had theorized and said that other items had caused the outbreak but the originally source of the outbreak was different than what they had originally thought.
Hopefully, the Center for Disease Control can find the source of the salmonella outbreak. Consumers need to know which foods to avoid to prevent them from being sickened by this bacteria. It is amazing how even eating food can be dangerous. There need to be stricter guidelines for people who handle food. There are constantly outbreaks of salmonella and recalls for food products. The FDA and CDC need to work together to protect consumers.

Since the King Nut brand is primarily used in schools, hospitals, long-term care facilities, it may not account for the national salmonella outbreak . As we can see some staffs at the food store playing in the sink, and the snow,ice turn into the flood, the broken conception on hygiene and the deregulation, furthermore the drastic change in temperature caused by the climate warming might make room for bacteria to multiply, I guess.
