Marquette, MI – Last Thursday, a 21-year-old Michigan woman with two uteri gave birth to a set of twin girls. What sets this birth apart from most is that each infant developed in a different womb.

The mother of the two girls, Sarah Reinfelder, has a condition known as uterus didelphys. This condition causes a woman’s uterus to grow in two separate sections, each with it’s own fallopian tube. While this condition occurs in approximately one in 3,000 women, most who have it are never aware of it. The chances of a woman with uterus didelphys actually carrying a child in each uterus at the same time is only one in 5 million, and there have only been three similar cases over the past 40 years.

Kaylin, weighing 3 pounds 15 ounces, and Valeria, at 4 pounds 15 ounces, were born to Reinfelder and husband Shane on February 26. Dr. Connie Hedmark and Dr. Breanna Pond delivered Kaylin first, followed by Valerie. Although both girls and their mother are healthy, the girls’ lungs did not have enough time to develop and so the two will remain in the hospital for about four more weeks before being released.

Reinfelder and her husband have been staying in Marquette for the past two months, along with their 10 month old son, in order to be near the hospital. They are originally from Sault Ste. Marie.
