Antipsychotics Cause Weight Gain in Kids
A recent study done on the side effects of antipsychotic drugs given to children, has produced some alarming findings. Youth aged 4-19 years old, are experiencing a rapid weight gain after they start taking an antipsychotic drug. In as a little as 11 weeks, otherwise healthy children are becoming overweight or obese. The study also found that the blood sugar levels, cholesterol, insulin and triglyceride levels were also raised to unhealthy levels. These raised levels could eventually lead to diabetes and heart problems.
There were a total of 4 drugs tested. Ablify, Zyprexa, Seroquel and Risperdal are the most commonly prescribed antipsychotic, and were chosen for the study. These drugs have been approved for use in adults, but doctors can prescribe them to children if they feel it is warranted. The youths that were prescribed the drug Zyprexa, had the most significant weight gain. The other 3 drugs tested, produced an average of a 10-13 pound weight gain.
The makers of these drugs have already stated that weight gain is a known side effect. These prescription drugs are used to treat youths that have mental illnesses. Bipolar and schizophrenia are typically treated with one of these medications. Doctors are now being urged to carefully weigh the options before prescribing one of these medicines. If they must prescribe one of these antipsychotic medications, they are being asked to closely monitor the patients diet and metabolic rate.
