Johnson & Johnson Issues Recall of Hip Replacement Systems

Friday, 27 Aug 2010

Worldwide, approximately 93,000 patients who have recently undergone hip replacement surgery outside the United States are faced with the possibility that a defective product may have been used and they may need to have additional tests and surgeries.

The DePuy ASR XL acetabular system and ASR Hip Resurfacing System first used by PEI in Ireland in 2004 has been recalled and the device ordered to be taken off the market. The recall was the result of studies showing a rate of 12% of revision surgeries within 5 years of the hip implant. Although the mechanical ball and socket device is eventually expected to wear out and need replacement, this rate was higher than expected, especially among women.

Patients with the hip replacement systems have experienced numerous problems including loosening parts that have resulted in increased pain, dislocations, fractures, and infections. Affected patients who have received the defective implant have been advised to seek medical counsel for blood tests and scans to determine if a second surgery is required.

Second surgeries bear the risk of more complications than a first hip placement because the bone has already been shaved down and scar tissue is present. The Irish Medicines Board in charge of regulating medical devices is investigating the issue. It is projected that about 1 in 8 receiving the device will need corrective surgery within 5 years of their initial surgery. DePuy, owned by multinational healthcare company Johnson and Johnson, has apologized for the recall and has committed to paying for all medical costs related to revision surgery including tests, procedures, doctors, and hospital expenses. johnson-johnson-recall-hip-replacement-systems

  1. so, does Johnson and Johnson “apologize” for the 2 years of pain and suffering due to a recalled piece?
What is the price of 2 years of someones life, spent on crutches, canes, and a rollator cart? And the stress and pain of a revision surgery? DuPey said in April that they were taking the piece off of the market in the US due to declining sales. Major coverup to protect their backsides. Buck up and admit your mess, then pay up to those who have suffered…
