FDA recall warns Infant Sleepers may cause sudden infant death syndrome
Mothercare, manufacturer of Head ‘n’ back, Resting Up and Snugglenest brand infant sleep positioners, have recalled the products from store shelves this week.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, as well as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have warned parents to discontinue using the products after reports that 12 children, all under the age of four months old have suffocated while using the devices. The reports concerning infant suffocation caused by the sleep positioners began in 1997. The CPSP has also received dozens of reports of parents and caregivers discovering infants who have been found face down on the devices or that have rolled between the positioner after rolling and becoming trapped between crib bedding and the positioning device. The popular sleep positioners have been a parent favorite for years after allegedly being able to help prevent SIDS, or sudden infant death syndrome.
In a precautionary measure, the FDA has asked that other manufacturers of sleep positioners that have not been identified as a potential hazard, to submit clinical data that the devices are actually beneficial to infants, although it has not mandated. The FDA also announced Wednesday that there has been no supporting evidence that using an infant sleep positioner will reduce the child’s risk of dying of SIDS and advised for parents and other caregivers to immediately discontinue using the products.
Retail giants Target, Toys ‘R’ Us, and Babies ‘R’ Us have already announced that they will discontinue selling the products in their stores as well as online.

I was shocked to see this, I felt when I had my son two years ago that it was important to have a sleep positioner! I was told it would help to reduce the risk of sids. When my son started to roll to his side to sleep, I used to positioner to allow him to do that. He never did move much during his sleep so I think this is why he didn’t have any problems with it.
Now pregnant with my second child due in about a month, I am glad that I saw this recall before I started to use the product again. I am hoping that parents heed this warning to protect thier children! It’s a scary thought that something designed to help protect our babies from dying, is causing them to suffocate!
Very concerned Mommy-
