New study says Jenny Craig, Inc. is for real

According to a new study, women who follow the Jenny Craig weight-loss program lose between three and four times as much weight as women who diet on their own.

The women were split into two groups. The first group received diet help and physical activity counseling for a year. The diet included some free liquid meal replacements and pre-packaged frozen dinners throughout the year. The second group had the same diet plan for the year, but they didn’t start the exercise program until six months into the study.

“Serious consideration should be given by health care systems to incorporating more intensive lifestyle interventions similar to those used in our study,” said researchers led by Bret Goodpaster, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. “Additional studies are clearly needed to determine long-term efficacy and cost-effectiveness of such approaches.”

The average total weight lost was 16.3 pounds with an in-person center-based program and 13.7 pounds with a phone-based program.

In 2009, approximately 27% of people in the U.S. were obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In conclusion the researchers note: “For clinical practitioners, the evidence suggests that the structured program as applied in this study provides another route for their overweight and obese patients to achieve and maintain weight loss through behavioral changes for at least a two-year period.”

The studies were presented in San Diego at the annual meeting of the Obesity Society, a scientific group based in Silver Spring, Maryland.
