Jane Fonda Diagnosed With Non-invasive Breast Cancer
Fitness icon and actress Jane Fonda was recently diagnosed with what has been termed non-invasive breast cancer. Fonda revealed to Entertainment Tonight that doctors had found the cancer a couple of weeks ago following the detection of a small tumor during a routine checkup.
Fonda, 72, has released a statement through her publicist saying that she is fine following surgery to remove the non-invasive tumor and is now free of cancer. Fonda herself confirmed this on her blog. Ductal carcinoma in situ (Latin for “in place” meaning the cancer cells do not move) is the most common form of non-invasive breast cancer in women. This type of cancer is designated stage 0 and has a high recovery rate.
Reports are that the double Oscar winner will not require additional treatment, just routine exams. Common treatments for such a cancer are a lumpectomy with radiation treatment or a mastectomy. Details of the specific treatment Fonda is having have not been made public.
Fonda is the daughter of the late Henry Fonda. Her brother Peter and niece Bridget are also actors. Fonda caused controversy while visiting North Vietnam during the Vietnam War and denouncing the war. She later apologized for some of her comments. Fonda is promoting her new fitness DVD, in stores November 30. The New York native plans to re-launch her Fonda Workout series with additional DVDs and related workout equipment by the end of the year. Fonda’s next acting role is in the independent movie “Peace, Love, and Misunderstanding.”
