“Bettlejuice” scandal bugs bottlefeeders
Advocates for breastfeeding could possibly see a surge benefiting their cause due to the recall of certain Similac powdered formulas, in addition to comments circulating the web like the following:
“I know nobody wants to hear this but those of you that have a choice to breastfeed but decide you want your freedom, this is exactly why you should have.”
While some comments are not made with the intention to inflict guilt, the guilt some moms feel for wanting to bottle feed has now become exacerbated, as can be seen from the following comment:
“My son is scheduled to see a pediatric dermatologist for rashes that are the worst I have ever seen. I hope this recall has nothing to do with it. My wife feels so bad about not trying harder to breast feed.”
After beetles were discovered at a facility in Sturgis, Michigan, tests were run on formula produced in the same area with minute, yet positive findings. Abbott Laboratories immediately initiated a voluntary recall and reported to the FDA, whose results will be released once investigations are completed. The health risks mainly include gastrointestinal discomfort or upset, but are not life threatening. For a list of recalled product numbers visit their website at www.similac.com/recall/lookup. You can also call the 1-888-376-2054 hotline with concerns or instructions of how to return recalled formula.
For some moms, bottle feeding isn’t a choice, it’s a necessity. Now, unfortunately, mothers may become paranoid about “ingredients” they’re getting, not what nutrients are missing.
