Scientists Create Human Sperm In Lab

Wednesday, 08 Jul 2009

Today, British scientists from Newcatle University, have made the news claiming to be able to create human sperm from stem cells. The technique developed claims to turn stem cells with male chromosomes from human embryos into reproductive cells. Prompting them to divide, they would produce functional sperm.

Using a new technique they claim to derive sperm cells from embryonic stem cells. A Newcastle researcher stated today that research would benefit by learning how sperm develops and to help infertile men. Using this research would also help to understand how genetic diseases are passed on.

Some other British scientist disagree by stating the cells created were abnormal. They did not have the shape, movement or function as the real sperm do. The experts state that they are still a long way from being authentic.

There is concern by some people that they are producing humans artificially, however the researchers have stated that is not their intention. This is still becoming a controversial subject in the debate over embryo research. It is the first time human sperm was created in a laboratory.

Scientists also are saying that possibly within ten years, this method would be helpful for couples to have children and also means that a woman could have a baby without a man.

The Comment on Reproductive Ethics state that this research is wrong and unethical.
