Genetic engineering: Genetically modified salmon coming soon to grocery store near you
The first genetically modified animal is one step closer to being sold in your local grocery store. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will hold a hearing Monday as it considers whether to approve genetically engineered salmon for human consumption.
If the FDA gives the salmon the green light, it would open the door for a variety of other genetically engineered animals, including an environmentally friendly pig that is being developed in Canada or cattle that are resistant to mad cow disease.
Owned by the publicly traded biotech firm AquaBounty Technologies, the salmon may make their way to grocery shelves within the next two years if regulators approve.
Many anticipate that if it does pass, the company will be required to reveal via a warning label that the salmon was genetically modified which may slow the sales of the fish. The FDA previously ruled that the salmon are safe for consumption, however did not say whether or not they would okay the fish to be sold.
The FDA will also review the safety and efficacy of the genetic modification. A panel of scientific advisers to the agency is expected to make a formal recommendation to the agency Monday. The agency typically follows the advice of its advisers, however does not always do so.

WOW!!! BAD idea what if one of these fish get into our fresh water and mate with a natural salmon ??????? will it know to swim back within an half a inch of the egg it planted a year ago??? NO!! and you know one moron will put one into fresh water and in forty years no salmon!!!!!!
Well as true as that is, I’m just curious… What gene did they put in the salmon to make it grow so much faster?
